John Kline was arguably the most beloved personality in Brethren History.

We did not decide to receive the John Kline legacy. Now, we must decide what we will do with that legacy.

A letter was sent to persons on the Brethren Encyclopedia, Inc., mailing list in June 2010. We have received $13,500 thus far from this appeal to bring our total of contributions and pledges to nearly $241,000, leaving just under $85,000 to be raised by the end of 2010. Contributions may be sent to: John Kline Homestead, P.O. Box 274, Broadway, VA 22815.

Church groups and a mystery bus tour of GE retirees from Roanoke, VA, recently toured the Linville Creek Church historical rooms and cemetery and the John Kline homestead. Please call the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren (540-896-5001) if wish to schedule a tour for your church or family group.

A family chose to give their young adult granddaughter/niece a special birthday gift, when she requested something about history. Since they are descendants of the family of John Kline's wife, Anna Wampler, they planned a tour of the John Kline Homestead and related sites. The evening brought forth many reflections and deeper interest in preserving his legacy. In celebration of the young adult's birthday, the family members made individual contributions to the John Kline Homestead.

The Board of Directors are planning several events at the homestead beginning in 2011 as part of the 4-year Sesquecentennial Commemoration of the Civil War. Included in the plans are a lecture series and interpretive dinners.

The Linville Creek Church has paperback copies of The Olive Branch, the 1901 collection of Brethren and Mennonite stories of persons who suffered for their faith during the Civil War ($9.95). They also have the lectures on John Kline's life and the early Brethren from the 1997 Bicentennial Celebration of John Kline ($12.00). Send a check to: Linville Creek Church of the Brethren, 409 Brethren Road, Broadway, VA. Include 5% sales tax + $3.00 for postage and handling per book.

In addition, we are working with neighboring Brethren congregations to assist in mowing around the house and outbuildings to reduce the maintenance costs.

June 16-19, 2009, a Church of the Brethren Junior High Workcamp stayed in the house and painted some of the outbuildings.  They also visited other Brethren historic sites in the area.
